Chromecast on the cheap: Tips and tricks for saving money and enjoying your favorite shows

Cast OS seems dead internally at Google. The other products that run the OS, the Nest Hub smart display line, have been slowly switching to Fuchsia. If the cheap Chromecast gets updated, there will be nothing left running the original Chromecast OS. Switching to Google TV for everything would also make the Chromecast more competitive with Roku, which includes an interface and remote with even the cheapest $30 device.

With prices already pretty cheap, there's no need to hang on for specific Chromecast sales. If you're in the UK or US and would prefer to stream content from a standalone box, you should take a look at the latest Roku deals (opens in new tab). Otherwise, there's a strong selection of streaming devices over on our Amazon Fire TV Stick prices and deals page.

Chromecast on the cheap

Chromecast Ultra deals are usually around 69/US$69/AU$95, so anything cheaper is an added bonus. It's worth noting though that the 4K-ready Amazon Fire TV Stick prices are cheaper nowadays though and that device also comes with a remote.

The low-end streaming device market is thoroughly saturated. Both Roku and Amazon sell boxes and dongles at every budget price point you can imagine, and if you want a rock-bottom Android solution, Walmart's Onn Android TV manages to provide a passable 4K streaming experience at an MSRP of just $30. A new, even cheaper Chromecast might please a certain subset of budget-conscious Google loyalists, but unless 'Boreal' ends up being outrageously cheap, making real inroads in the sub-$50 space is going to be awfully difficult.

Apple prices its products in this way all the time; I believe it's why last year's iPad Mini is priced so similarly to the iPad Air. But the company's also been known to leverage its supply chain to make surprisingly cheap, surprisingly good products: 2020's iPhone SE recycled parts from older iPhones to come in at an uncharacteristically affordable 400 bucks, and it's a great little phone. (We're expecting a refreshed model later this year; we'll see if Apple can nail the price-to-performance ratio twice in a row.) The entry-level iPad is also rocking older components, and at $329, it's one of the best tablets you can buy in its price range.

As it stands today, Amazon, Roku, and most manufacturers of Android TV devices operate in an entirely different world from Apple; not a lot of people are cross-shopping streaming boxes with hundred-dollar price differences. But a $100 Apple TV that supports 4K and modern audio and HDR standards could raise some eyebrows from folks looking at the few existing mid-range devices like the Roku Ultra, Fire TV Cube, and even higher-end options like Nvidia's most recent Shield TVs. It'd be a tangible threat to manufacturers of reasonably priced, 4K-capable streaming boxes, in a way Apple's existing TV offerings just aren't. Those manufacturers would need to up their game to avoid losing ground in an increasingly competitive market. In short, a cheaper Apple TV would foster competition.

In that post I talked about the cheap setup we were using at our home in order to stream tv shows, movies and a bunch of other online video direct to our home theater system via a streaming software called Playon.

Google is rumoured to be working on a cheaper Chromecast video streaming dongle that maxes out at 1080p resolution. It's thought to be called the Chromecast HD with Google TV. Now, a new filing with the Federal Communications Commission in the US, as recently spotted by Droid-Life, indicates Google is about to launch the device.

Rumors have been swirling all year around a new, cheaper version of Chromecast with Google TV. Now, a leak claims that the device's launch is "imminent" and it will cost nearly 50 percent less than the current model, which is one of the best streaming devices in the market.

Reports of a cheaper Chromecast with Google TV first arrived back in January, then were seemingly confirmed in June by an FCC (opens in new tab) filing for a new Google-made device. While the filing didn't explicitly state it was a Chromecast, it revealed the streaming specs and noted that it would be powered by a USB connection.

A $30 streaming dongle is extremely affordable, and all three companies tend to slash prices even further on Black Friday and other shopping holidays. We wouldn't be surprised to see the cheaper Chromecast with Google TV go on sale not long after its launch.

Curry's always have a range of deals on their website and there will be students moving out or updating their tech so you should be able to find a cheap one from a fellow student during your time here or you could always have a look on Facebook Marketplace.

The W300's cheap price point and simple interface make it a good camcorder to leave by the pool, stuff in your camping sack, or hand off to the kids when they scoot down the Slip 'n Slide during Summer vacation. It doesn't have any extravagant new features that weren't already present on last year's model, but Samsung seems content on letting this good idea ride for another year. 2ff7e9595c
